Free CV Template

A CV template gives you a ready structure for the document most of the world calls a CV: a clear summary of your experience, education and skills, usually one or two pages long. In the UK, India, Australia, New Zealand and much of Europe, that is what Americans call a resume. Below you'll find which CV format fits the country you're applying in, what to include at each stage of your career, and which designs work for everything from a first job to a senior role.

CV or resume? It depends on the country

The same word means different things depending on where you apply:

So a UK or Indian CV and a US resume are, in practice, the same thing under different names. If you're applying for research or university teaching posts anywhere, you need the longer academic CV instead.

What to put in a CV at each career stage

Every CV needs a contact line, a short personal statement, your employment history with the newest role first, education, and grouped skills. What changes with experience is the order and the weight:

Leave out what no longer helps: a line saying references are available on request, a photo for UK roles, your date of birth, and the signed declaration some Indian CVs end with, unless the employer asks. And when applying to a US employer, call it a resume and keep it tight.

Making your CV readable by ATS

Large employers and recruitment agencies in the UK, India and Australia commonly run applications through an applicant tracking system before a person reads them. A CV the software can't read cleanly may arrive with jumbled sections or missing dates.

A few CV habits help:

Every ResumeInk design is checked to read cleanly in ATS text extraction, with real, selectable text in a logical reading order and no text inside images. The editor also shows an ATS score, so you can see how readable your CV is before you send it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CV the same as a resume?

In the UK, India, Australia and most of Europe, yes: both mean a short summary of your work history, education and skills. In the US and Canada, a CV usually means a longer academic document, and job seekers send a resume.

How long should a CV be in the UK?

Two pages is the usual maximum, and one page is fine early in your career. Academic CVs are the exception and can run longer.

Is this CV template free to use?

Previewing and downloading the final PDF are both free. You can upload your CV, edit it and try different designs first.

Should I write CV or resume at the top of the document?

Neither is needed; your name works as the title. If you do label it, use the word the country expects: CV in the UK, India and Europe, resume in the US.
