CV or resume: what's the difference?

In the US, a resume is a short, tailored summary for a job application, while a CV is a long academic record. In India, the UK, and most of Europe, the two words are used interchangeably for the same one- or two-page document. The exception everywhere is the academic CV — for research, teaching, and PhD applications — which also lists publications, conferences, grants, and teaching, and can run much longer.

What to include in your CV

• Personal details — name, phone, email, city, and a LinkedIn profile.
• Profile — a short summary of your experience and goals.
• Work experience — latest first, with achievements rather than duties.
• Education — degree, institution, year, and CGPA or percentage if you're a fresher.
• Skills, projects, and internships — especially early in your career.
• Certifications and languages — when they matter for the role.

Unless an employer asks for them, leave out your date of birth, marital status, religion, and a photo — recruiters don't need them to shortlist you.

How long should a CV be?
