A project manager resume should answer three questions quickly: what kind of projects you deliver, how big they were, and whether they landed on time and on budget. Hiring managers in IT, construction, engineering, marketing and the public sector ask the same things in different words. This page covers format by seniority, what to include, summaries, bullet examples with delivery metrics, the PMP, PRINCE2 and Agile keywords that job ads repeat in India, the US, the UK and Australia, and the mistakes to avoid.
Use one page as a project coordinator or with under about five years of project management, and two pages once you have run several sizeable projects or a programme. Our one-page vs two-page guide explains the choice. Reverse-chronological order works best: summary, certifications, experience, skills, education.
Certifications sit high because PMP or PRINCE2 is often a screening question. If you manage many short projects, add a short selected-projects section with each project's name, budget, team and result, and keep role bullets for what you did across them. Contractors, common in the UK and Australian day-rate markets, can group engagements under one heading.
Layout tip: a clean single column with dates in a consistent place. ResumeInk's Classic, Stacked and Timeline layouts all work, and the Projects section shows a name, context and one line of detail for each project.
What to include in a project manager resume
Project facts: type, budget, team size, duration, methodology and the outcome against time, cost and scope.
Methodology: Agile or Scrum, waterfall, hybrid or PRINCE2, and how you adapted it.
Governance: steering committees, RAID logs, change control, status reporting and vendor management.
Industry detail: IT project managers name the SDLC, cloud or ERP platforms; construction project managers name contract forms such as JCT or NEC4 in the UK, AIA in the US or AS 4000 in Australia, plus scheduling in Primavera P6.
Certifications: PMP from PMI (which requires documented experience leading projects), CAPM for newcomers, PRINCE2 Foundation or Practitioner, PMI-ACP, CSM or PSM for Scrum, and the APM PMQ in the UK.
Stakeholders: who you reported to and how many teams, vendors or sites you coordinated.
Entry level: Project coordinator with three years supporting IT infrastructure projects worth up to USD 2M. Maintains plans, RAID logs and status reports for 4 concurrent projects, and ran the cutover plan for a 600-user email migration. CAPM certified; skilled in MS Project, Jira and Smartsheet.
Mid level: PMP and PRINCE2 Practitioner with seven years delivering digital and infrastructure projects in UK financial services. Delivered 11 projects of up to £4M, 10 on or ahead of schedule, leading hybrid teams of 8 to 20 across vendors and in-house engineers.
Senior: Programme manager with 14 years in Australian construction and infrastructure, leading an AUD 180M hospital redevelopment across four stages. Manages head contractors, reports to an executive steering committee and has delivered three programmes with zero lost-time injuries.
Open with the type and size of project you run, because that is how hiring managers sort project managers.
Project manager resume bullet point examples
Delivered a USD 3.2M ERP rollout to 1,100 users across 5 sites, 2 weeks early and 4% under budget.
Led a team of 18 across in-house engineers and 2 vendors to migrate 240 servers to a new data centre with under 30 minutes of unplanned downtime.
Recovered a red-rated programme by re-baselining scope and schedule, bringing it back to green within 10 weeks.
Introduced a hybrid Agile framework across 6 squads, raising sprint predictability from 68% to 90%.
Managed change control on a £12M office fit-out, assessing 85 change requests and holding cost growth to 2.1% of contract value.
Cut vendor onboarding from 6 weeks to 3 with standard statement-of-work templates and a weekly vendor RAID review.
Ran monthly steering committee reporting for an AUD 45M transformation portfolio of 9 projects.
Mentored 4 project coordinators; two earned the CAPM and moved into project manager roles.
Show results against time, cost and scope, plus quality or adoption where you can measure it.
Write each certification in full once, such as Project Management Professional (PMP), so a search for either form finds you. Applicant tracking systems match terms, so mirror the ad's wording; see our guide to resume keywords for ATS screening. Keep the list to what you have used on real projects.
Common project manager resume mistakes
Duties instead of delivery. “Managed the project lifecycle” fits every project manager. Say what was delivered, by when and for how much.
No scale. Budget, team size and duration let a reader compare you with the role.
Every methodology listed. Name the ones you have actually used and show them in bullets.
Out-of-date or vague certifications. PMP has to be renewed every three years, so don't list a lapsed one as current. Write PRINCE2 Foundation or Practitioner, not just PRINCE2.
Hiding a project you rescued. Turning round a failing project is strong evidence. Say where it started, what you changed and where it ended.
Ignoring industry language. A construction hiring manager wants programmes, contractors and safety; an IT one wants releases, vendors and uptime. Rewrite for the sector you are applying to.
Do I need PMP or PRINCE2 on a project manager resume?
Not always, but many ads list one as required or preferred. PMP is widely requested in the US and India, while PRINCE2 appears more often in UK and Australian ads, especially in the public sector. If you are working towards one, give the expected exam date.
How do I write a project manager resume with no project management experience?
Show projects you ran without the title, such as a system rollout, an office move, an event or a process change. Give each a scope, a deadline and a result, add the CAPM or PRINCE2 Foundation, and apply for project coordinator roles as a first step.
Should a project manager resume list every project?
No. Pick the three to six most relevant to the job and group similar smaller projects into one line. Contractors can add a short selected-projects section instead of listing every engagement.
How do I show Agile experience on a project manager resume?
Name your role in the team, such as delivery lead or Scrum Master, the ceremonies you ran and a measurable result like release frequency or sprint predictability. Add PSM, CSM or PMI-ACP if you hold them.
