Free Business Development Resume Template & Examples
A business development resume needs to show how you find and open new business: the markets you targeted, the meetings you booked, the partners you signed and the revenue that followed. This guide covers business development executives, the usual title in India and the Gulf, business development representatives in US and UK sales teams, and business development managers who own partnerships or new markets. It covers format, credentials, summary and bullet examples, keywords and mistakes. Upload your resume and ResumeInk's AI rebuilds it in an ATS-readable design; switching to another design takes one tap.
Best resume format for a business development role
Use reverse-chronological order on one page, unless you are a business development manager or director with eight or more years of deals and partnerships, when two pages are fine.
Start with a summary that says which kind of business development you do, because the title means different things. In India a business development executive usually sells directly and carries a target. In the US and UK a business development representative books meetings for account executives. A business development manager may close deals, run partnerships or open a new market. For Gulf roles, add your visa status and notice period to the header, since recruiters there ask for both early. Then list experience with one scope line per role (product, market, deal size, target), skills, education and certifications.
Layout tip: ResumeInk's Skills-first layout puts sectors, markets and languages up front, which suits Gulf and export roles, and Classic centered suits a straightforward sales career. If you lead a team, compare the sales manager resume guide.
What to include in a business development resume
Targets and attainment: your monthly, quarterly or annual target and the percentage you hit, year by year.
Pipeline you created: meetings booked, qualified opportunities, pipeline value and conversion to closed business.
Deals and partnerships: new clients, distributors, channel partners or alliances signed, with deal size and contract length.
Markets: regions, sectors and buyer types, such as hospitals, manufacturers, government or small businesses.
Methods: cold calling, email and LinkedIn outreach, events, tenders, referrals and partner co-selling.
Sales cycle: how long deals took to close and who signed them, such as owners, procurement teams or boards.
Partner results: revenue or leads that came through partners you signed, and how long they stayed active.
Rankings: top performer awards and your rank in the team, such as 2nd of 30.
Tools: the CRM and prospecting tools you use every day.
Languages and mobility: languages you sell in, a driving licence for field roles, and willingness to travel.
If you mostly close deals rather than open them, the sales resume guide covers quota and deal metrics in more depth.
Business development certifications and credentials by country
Most business development jobs need no licence. The exception is regulated products such as insurance and investments, where the selling licence comes first. Otherwise employers look at targets hit, sector knowledge and how you prospect.
India: a BBA, MBA or PGDM is common, and field roles often ask for a two-wheeler and a driving licence. Roles selling to government value experience with GeM and public tenders.
US: Salesforce or HubSpot certifications and MEDDICC or Sandler training help. Business development in government contracting may need a security clearance, and APMP certification is valued for proposal-heavy work.
UK: Institute of Sales Professionals membership is recognised, and defence or public sector roles often need Security Check (SC) clearance.
Australia: defence and government roles often ask for an AGSVA security clearance, and field roles a current driver licence.
UAE and the Gulf: job ads often list a UAE driving licence, GCC market experience and Arabic as strong pluses.
List any licence or clearance with its level and date so a recruiter can check it quickly.

Skills & ATS keywords for business development resumes
Business development ads mix sales and partnership language. Common keywords:
Prospecting: lead generation, cold calling, outbound, email outreach, LinkedIn prospecting, market research, account mapping, lead qualification.
Activity without outcomes. “Made 80 calls a day” needs a second half: the meetings, deals or revenue those calls produced.
No target context. “Closed INR 50 lakh” means more next to the target, the team average and your rank in the team.
A title that misleads. If your manager title covered pure prospecting, say so in the scope line. Recruiters will ask anyway, and a clear answer builds trust.
Short stints with no reason. Business development roles turn over fast. If a company shut down or a product was dropped, add a short note.
Missing the market. Name the regions, sectors and buyer types, since Gulf and export employers screen on them.
Generic soft skills. “Excellent communication” is assumed. Show it with a deal you negotiated, a partner you won or a tender you led.
How do I write a business development executive resume as a fresher?
Lead with internships, college fest sponsorships, part-time sales or any project where you persuaded someone to sign up or buy, with numbers. Add the CRM or tools you have used and your languages, and keep it to one page.
What is the difference between business development and sales on a resume?
In India the two titles often describe the same target-carrying sales job. Elsewhere, business development usually leans toward finding new clients, markets or partners, while sales roles may also manage existing accounts.
What does BDR mean on a resume?
Business development representative, a US and UK title for an outbound role that books meetings for account executives. Show meetings booked, pipeline created and how many meetings became opportunities.
Should I include my targets on a business development resume?
Yes. Give the target, your attainment as a percentage and your rank where it helps, year by year. If you missed a target, show the year you beat it or the pipeline you built.
How do I move from business development into a partnerships role?
Highlight partners you signed, onboarded or sold with, and the revenue that came through them. Use a summary that names partnerships as your focus and mirror the ad's terms, such as channel, alliances or ecosystem.
