DevOps work is measured in numbers your dashboards already hold: deployment frequency, uptime, recovery time and cloud spend. A strong DevOps engineer resume names the platforms you run (AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Terraform), shows the scale and backs each claim with one of those numbers. Use the summaries, bullets and keyword lists below, then upload your current resume as a PDF, Word file or photo and ResumeInk's AI rebuilds it in a clean, ATS-readable design you can edit.
Use one page for up to about five years of DevOps or SRE work; two pages are fine for senior platform engineers with several large migrations to describe. A good order is summary, technical skills, certifications, experience, projects, education. Certifications sit higher than on most developer resumes because DevOps job ads often name them.
Group the skills block by job to be done: cloud, containers and orchestration, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, observability, scripting. A reader should find "EKS" or "Argo CD" at a glance. ResumeInk's Developer stack layout keeps technical skills prominent, and the Compact header layout fits a long tool list on one page.
Many DevOps engineers come from system administration, support or development. If that is you, keep the earlier role but write its bullets around automation and reliability so the story points one way. A skills-based resume can help a career changer, as long as employers and dates stay visible. For a broader engineering profile, compare the software engineer resume template.
What to include in a DevOps engineer resume
Header: name, city, email, phone, LinkedIn and GitHub. In Australia, state your working rights. For government work, list an active clearance by level only: Baseline, NV1 or NV2 (AGSVA) in Australia, SC or DV in the UK, Secret or Top Secret in the US.
Summary: your cloud, your orchestrator, the scale you run and one reliability or delivery result.
Skills: grouped by category, with versions where they matter.
Certifications: AWS Certified DevOps Engineer — Professional or Solutions Architect — Associate, Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400), Google Cloud Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), HashiCorp Terraform Associate, RHCSA. Show the year earned.
Experience: pipelines built, release frequency, incidents and recovery time, cost cuts, migrations, security work.
Projects: public Terraform modules or Helm charts, a homelab cluster, or open-source contributions.
Education: degree and year. In DevOps hiring, certifications and hands-on work often count as much.
DevOps Engineer resume summary examples
Fit the cloud, the orchestrator and one hard number into two or three lines.
Entry level: "Junior DevOps engineer with a year in IT support and the AWS Certified Solutions Architect — Associate. Automated server builds with Ansible and Bash, built a GitHub Actions pipeline for a containerised app, and run a Kubernetes homelab monitored with Prometheus and Grafana."
Mid level: "DevOps engineer with 6 years on AWS and Kubernetes for insurance and logistics platforms. Took releases from fortnightly to 20+ a day with GitHub Actions and Argo CD, cut cloud spend by 31% and brought mean time to recovery under 20 minutes."
Senior: "Senior platform engineer with 12 years in infrastructure, the last 5 leading a platform team. Built an internal developer platform on EKS and Terraform used by 40 teams, defined SLOs and on-call practice, and led a data-centre exit of 300 servers to AWS."
DevOps Engineer resume bullet point examples
Where you can, use the DORA measures: deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate and time to restore service.
Rebuilt CI/CD on GitHub Actions and Argo CD, taking deployments from fortnightly to 20+ a day and lead time for changes from 5 days to under 2 hours.
Cut monthly AWS spend by 31% through rightsizing, Savings Plans and spot instances for non-production EKS node groups.
Wrote Terraform modules for VPC, EKS and RDS that provision a new environment in 25 minutes instead of 3 days.
Introduced Prometheus, Grafana and PagerDuty alerting with SLOs for 30 services, bringing mean time to recovery from 2 hours to 18 minutes.
Lowered change failure rate from 18% to 6% by adding canary releases and automatic rollback with Argo Rollouts.
Migrated 300 on-premises servers to AWS over 9 months with no customer-facing outages.
Hardened the container supply chain with Trivy scanning, signed images and Vault-managed secrets, closing every critical finding from an external audit.
In a first DevOps role, replaced manual server builds with Ansible playbooks, cutting setup time per server from half a day to 15 minutes.
Skills & ATS keywords for DevOps engineer resumes
DevOps ads read like tool lists, and keyword searches often treat them that way. Match the ad's cloud and tool names exactly; how to make an ATS-friendly resume covers the layout side.
Soft skills: calm incident leadership, clear runbooks, teaching developers to own their pipelines
Common DevOps engineer resume mistakes
A tool list with no results. Twenty tool names say nothing about what you ran. Tie each major tool to a bullet with a number.
Vague reliability claims. "Improved uptime" needs a before and after, such as 99.5% to 99.95%, or recovery time from hours to minutes.
Hiding cost work. Cloud savings are a strong signal. If you can't share amounts, show them as percentages.
Expired certifications shown as current. Many cloud and Kubernetes certifications expire after one to three years. Show the year, and renew or drop lapsed ones.
Oversharing. Leave out internal hostnames, IP ranges and anything about classified systems; describe scale and outcome instead.
Sysadmin wording. "Maintained servers" sounds manual. "Automated", "codified" and "self-service" tell a better story when they are true.
Which certifications should a DevOps engineer put on a resume?
List the ones the job ad names and that you hold, commonly AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional, Azure AZ-400, CKA or HashiCorp Terraform Associate. Include the year earned, and leave lapsed ones off.
How do I move from system administrator to DevOps on my resume?
Rewrite your sysadmin bullets around automation, scripting and reliability, and add a project that shows CI/CD, containers and Terraform end to end. A cloud certification and a summary that names the DevOps role you want complete the shift.
Should I put my security clearance on a DevOps resume?
Yes, for government and defence roles: state the level and that it is active, such as Baseline or NV1 in Australia, SC in the UK or Secret in the US. Don't describe the systems or work it covered.
Should my resume say DevOps engineer, SRE or platform engineer?
Match the job ad. SRE suits work centred on SLOs, on-call and reliability, platform engineer suits building internal tooling for other developers, and DevOps engineer suits pipelines and infrastructure automation.
