An internship resume is judged on potential, not track record. Recruiters know you are still studying, so they look for grades or coursework in the right subjects, projects that show you can finish something, and signs of initiative in clubs, part-time jobs or competitions. This page is for students applying for summer internships, co-ops, placement years and vacation programs in India, the US, the UK and Australia. Upload an old resume or start from a sample, and ResumeInk builds a clean one-page design you can tailor for every application.
Keep it to one page. There is rarely a reason for a student to go longer, and recruiters reading a stack of applications appreciate it. Our guide to one page vs two pages explains the trade-offs.
Put education first: degree, university, expected graduation date and grades if they help. Then projects, experience (internships, part-time jobs, research), leadership and activities, skills, and certifications or awards. Once you have a substantial internship behind you, move experience above projects.
Make your target obvious. Name the field in your title line, for example Finance Internship Candidate or Data Analytics Student, and say when you are available. The Academic layout leads with education, which suits students. If you have already graduated and want a full-time job, our resume builder for freshers is the better fit.
What to include in an internship resume
Education: degree, university, expected graduation and grades in the local format: GPA in the US, a predicted or current classification such as a 2:1 in the UK, WAM or GPA in Australia, CGPA or percentage in India.
Relevant coursework: three to six modules that match the internship, not your whole transcript.
Projects: class, personal or competition projects, with what you built or found and a result.
Experience: earlier internships, part-time jobs, research assistance, tutoring or freelance work. Any job counts if you show what you learned or improved.
Leadership and activities: societies, fests, sports captaincy, volunteering, hackathons, case competitions.
Skills and certifications: tools and languages you can actually use, plus short courses such as NPTEL, Coursera or Google certificates when they are relevant.
Availability: internship dates, duration and whether you can work remotely or relocate.
Internship resume summary examples
A summary is optional for students, but two lines naming the role and your best evidence help a busy recruiter. Examples by stage:
First internship: First-year economics student (GPA 3.7) looking for a summer 2027 finance or operations internship. Built a budget tracker in Excel for a 60-member student society and tutors two classmates in statistics.
Second internship: Third-year B.Tech computer science student (CGPA 8.6) seeking a summer internship in data or backend engineering. During a two-month internship at a logistics start-up, automated a weekly report in Python, cutting preparation from five hours to 40 minutes.
Placement year: Second-year BSc marketing student at a UK university, on track for a 2:1, seeking a 12-month industrial placement from June 2027. Runs social media for the university's largest society and grew its Instagram following from 1,200 to 4,800 in one term.

Small numbers still help. They show scale, and that you paid attention to results.
Skills & ATS keywords for internship resumes
Large employers often take internship applications through an applicant tracking system, so mirror the words in the advertisement. Pick the group that fits your field:
Business and finance: Excel, financial modelling, PowerPoint, market research, data analysis, SQL.
Technology and data: Python, Java, SQL, Git, React, Tableau or Power BI, machine learning basics.
Marketing and communications: social media, content writing, Canva, Google Analytics, SEO basics, copywriting.
Research and science: literature review, survey design, R or SPSS, lab techniques, report writing.
Transferable skills: teamwork, communication, time management, problem solving, leadership, learning quickly.
Many ads separate required from preferred skills; cover the required ones first. Only list a skill you could discuss in an interview. A short, true list beats a long one, and a project that uses a skill is the best proof of it.
Common internship resume mistakes
A generic objective. Seeking a challenging opportunity to grow says nothing. Name the internship, the field and your availability.
Burying education. As a student it is your strongest section, so keep it at the top.
Coursework instead of work. One project with a result beats a list of ten course names.
School-era padding. Once you are at university, keep school results only when the employer asks for them, which is common in India for Class 10 and 12 marks.
Ignoring local norms. A photo is common on Indian student resumes and usually left off in the US, UK and Australia, and grades should be in the local format.
One version for everything. Reorder projects and skills for each application; ResumeInk's optional AI help can also tailor your wording to a job description.
How do I write a resume for an internship with no experience?
Lead with education, then use projects, coursework, clubs, volunteering and part-time jobs as your experience. Give each one or two bullets with an action and a result, and add a skills section with tools you have actually used.
Should I put my GPA or CGPA on an internship resume?
Usually yes, when it helps. Many US students list a GPA of 3.0 or above, UK students give a predicted or current classification, Australian students may add a WAM or GPA, and Indian students commonly list CGPA. If an application asks for grades, always include them.
Should I include high school on my internship resume?
First-year students can, especially for a strong result or a leadership role. After that, drop it unless the employer asks; Indian campus recruiters often want Class 10 and 12 percentages, so keep them ready for those applications.
Should I list online courses and certificates on an internship resume?
List the ones that match the internship and that you finished, such as an NPTEL course, a Coursera specialisation or a Google certificate. Put them under skills or certifications, and pair them with a project that used what you learned.
