An accountant resume has to prove two things quickly: that you are qualified, and that your numbers can be trusted. Hiring managers look for your credential, the close and reporting work you own, the systems you use and proof that you made the finance function faster or more accurate. Below you will find the right format by seniority, summary and bullet examples with realistic figures, the keywords accounting job ads repeat in India, the US, the UK and Australia, and the mistakes that weaken good candidates.
Use a reverse-chronological format. Keep it to one page if you are a graduate, a trainee or have under about five years of experience. Two pages is normal for senior accountants, financial controllers and anyone with audit, tax and group reporting to show. In India and the UK the document is usually called a CV, and two pages is common from mid level.
A section order that works: a header with your name and qualification, a two- or three-line summary, professional qualifications, experience, systems and skills, then education. Put the qualification near the top, because it is often the first filter. If you are still qualifying, say exactly where you are, for example ACCA: 9 of 13 exams passed, completion expected June 2027.
Pick a calm, single-column layout with dates in one consistent place. ResumeInk's Classic, Formal and Traditional layouts read cleanly from top to bottom; see our professional resume templates. Graduates can start with the resume builder for freshers.
What to include in an accountant resume
Your qualification, named correctly. India: CA from ICAI (or CA Intermediate and your articleship if you are still qualifying) and CMA from ICMAI. UK: ACA (ICAEW), CA (ICAS), ACCA or CIMA, with AAT for technician roles. US: your CPA licence and the state that issued it, or the exam sections passed, and CMA from the IMA. Australia: CA ANZ or CPA Australia membership.
Scope of each role: number of entities, revenue or balance-sheet size, team size and who you reported to.
Close and reporting: your month-end close timeline, consolidations, statutory accounts and management packs.
Standards and tax: Ind AS, IFRS, US GAAP or FRS 102; GST and TDS in India, VAT in the UK, sales tax in the US, GST and BAS in Australia.
Systems: your ERP and accounting software by name, and how far your Excel goes.
Audit: the audits you prepared for or led, and how they went.
Accountant resume summary examples
Two or three lines: your qualification, your years and type of work, then one result. Adapt one of these:
Entry level: Commerce graduate and CA Intermediate (both groups cleared) who has completed articleship at a mid-size audit firm. Worked on statutory audits for 14 clients in manufacturing and retail, prepared GST reconciliations and drafted tax audit schedules. Confident in Tally Prime, Zoho Books and Excel.
Mid level: ACCA-qualified accountant with six years in UK industry, running the month-end close for a three-entity group with £40M revenue. Cut the close from eight to five working days, owns the VAT returns and leads the year-end audit file. Strong in Sage Intacct, Excel and Power BI.
Senior: CPA and financial controller with 12 years in US GAAP reporting, consolidations and SOX compliance. Leads a team of nine across general ledger, accounts payable, receivables and tax for a USD 250M multi-state business, moved the group onto NetSuite and has closed three audits with no material weaknesses.
Replace the numbers with your own. One result a reader can check does more than a line of adjectives.
Accountant resume bullet point examples
Cut the month-end close from 9 to 5 working days by standardising reconciliations, introducing a shared close calendar and automating accrual journals in SAP.
Prepared Ind AS financial statements for 3 group companies with combined revenue of INR 420 crore; auditors issued an unmodified opinion in each of three years.
Filed GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for 4 GST registrations with no late filings in 24 months, and recovered INR 38 lakh of unclaimed input tax credit.
Reconciled 40+ bank and intercompany accounts every month and cleared a £180K backlog of unmatched items within one quarter.
Led the year-end audit for a USD 120M subsidiary, preparing 60+ PBC schedules and cutting auditor queries by 35% on the prior year.
Introduced three-way matching for supplier invoices, cutting duplicate invoices by 90% and saving about AUD 75K a year.
Built an Excel and Power BI variance pack that cut management reporting prep from 3 days to 1; it is now used by 6 department heads.
Supervised 4 accounts executives and introduced review checklists that cut journal corrections by 40%.
The pattern: a strong verb, the scope, and a number a finance manager could verify. Use the currency of the country you are applying in, and say what each figure measures.
Skills & ATS keywords for accountant resumes
Use the exact names from the job ad. If it says SAP S/4HANA or Xero, write that rather than “accounting software”. Grouped skills are easier to scan:
Accounting: general ledger, month-end and year-end close, bank and balance-sheet reconciliations, accruals and prepayments, fixed asset register, intercompany, consolidation, accounts payable and receivable, cash flow statements.
Reporting and compliance: IFRS, Ind AS, US GAAP, FRS 102, statutory accounts, management accounts, audit support, internal controls, SOX.
Tax: GST, TDS, VAT returns, corporation tax computations, sales and use tax, BAS.
Software: Tally Prime, Zoho Books, SAP, Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365, QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, MYOB, Excel (pivot tables, XLOOKUP, Power Query), Power BI.
Soft skills: accuracy under deadlines, stakeholder communication, explaining numbers to non-finance managers.
Hiding the qualification. If CA or CPA appears only in the education section at the bottom, a recruiter filtering for it can miss it. Put it in the header or summary as well.
Vague exam status. “Pursuing ACCA” says little. List the papers passed and the expected completion date.
Duties instead of results. “Responsible for reconciliations” repeats the job ad. Say how many, how often and what improved.
Figures without scale. A five-day close means more next to the number of entities and the size of the business.
Generic software lines. “Proficient in accounting software” misses the keyword. Name Tally, SAP, Xero or NetSuite.
Errors on the page. A typo in a figure or mixed date formats hurts more in accounting than in most fields. Check every number twice before you send it.
How do I write an accountant resume with no experience?
Lead with your qualification progress and education, then any articleship, internship, tax-season or volunteer bookkeeping work. Show practical skills such as reconciliations, GST or VAT returns and the software you have used, and keep it to one page.
Should I put CA, ACCA or CPA after my name on a resume?
Yes, once you are a qualified member or licence holder, because recruiters often filter for it. In India many accountants write CA before the name; elsewhere the letters go after it, such as ACA, ACCA or CPA. If you are still studying, describe your exam progress instead of using the letters.
Should an accountant resume be one or two pages?
One page suits graduates, trainees and most accountants with under five years of experience. Two pages is fine for senior accountants and controllers with substantial audit, tax or group reporting work, and is common for CVs in India and the UK.
How do I move from audit to an industry accounting role on my resume?
Reframe your audit work in the language industry teams use: reconciliations, close, reporting and controls. Name the sectors and sizes of clients you covered, highlight any accounts you prepared yourself, and list the ERP systems you worked with.
