Resume Format for Freshers: Section Order, Details and Samples
By the ResumeInk Team · 13 October 2026
Whether you are preparing for campus placements or applying off-campus, recruiters look for the same things in a fresher's resume, in roughly the same places. This guide sets out the resume format for freshers that Indian recruiters expect: the section order, how to write a career objective, how to show CGPA and board marks, projects, internships and NPTEL or Coursera certificates, when personal details and a declaration belong, and three sample outlines for engineering, commerce and MBA freshers.
The section order Indian recruiters expect
A fresher resume in India follows a fairly standard order. Recruiters at a campus drive often go through a large pile of resumes for one role, so putting things where they expect them makes yours quicker to read:
Header: full name, phone number with +91, a professional email (your name, not a nickname), city and LinkedIn. Add GitHub or a portfolio for tech and design roles.
Career objective or summary: two or three lines.
Education: degree, then Class 12 (or diploma), then Class 10.
Skills: technical or key skills, grouped.
Internships and training.
Projects: academic, final-year and personal.
Certifications.
Achievements and positions of responsibility: competitions, ranks, scholarships, club and fest roles.
Languages, then personal details and a declaration only if the situation calls for them (see below).
Adjust the middle so your strongest proof comes first. A real internship goes above projects; if your final-year project is your best work, swap them. For software roles, keep skills high so your stack is visible at a glance. For campus placements, if your placement cell gives a fixed format, follow it exactly. For off-campus applications through job portals and company websites, tailor the skills and objective to each job description, and use plain headings that applicant tracking systems recognise.
Career objective vs summary
A career objective says what you want. A summary says what you offer. Indian freshers have traditionally written objectives, and most recruiters still accept one, but the strongest versions blend the two: your degree, your best piece of proof and the role you want, in two or three lines.
Weak, and very common: "To work in a reputed organisation where I can utilise my skills and grow along with the company." It could belong to anyone. Three stronger versions:
B.Tech: "Computer science graduate (CGPA 8.4) who has built two full-stack projects in React and Node.js and completed an eight-week internship at a fintech startup. Seeking a software developer role working on back-end services."
B.Com: "B.Com graduate with hands-on experience of GST return filing and TallyPrime from a six-week internship at a CA firm. Looking for a junior accountant or accounts executive role."
MBA: "MBA (Marketing) graduate whose summer internship in FMCG sales covered 120 retail outlets and produced a distributor scheme the team adopted. Seeking a management trainee role in sales or brand management."
Change the last line for every company you apply to. More examples for different levels are in our resume summary examples.
Education: percentages, CGPA and boards
Education carries more weight on an Indian fresher resume than almost anywhere else, because many campus recruiters set minimum marks for Class 10, Class 12 and the degree. List all three in reverse order, with the board and the scale:
B.Tech, Computer Science and Engineering — [College], [University], 2022-2026 — CGPA 8.1/10 (up to semester 6)
Class XII, CBSE — [School], [City], 2022 — 88.6%
Class X, CBSE — [School], [City], 2020 — 92.4%
A few rules that save trouble later:
Name the board: CBSE, CISCE (ICSE for Class 10, ISC for Class 12) or your state board.
Write the scale (8.1/10, not just 8.1), and add "up to semester 6" if your degree isn't finished.
Don't convert CGPA to a percentage unless the form asks. If it does, use the formula your university publishes, not one you found online.
Diploma holders who joined through lateral entry list the diploma in place of, or alongside, Class 12.
Gap or drop year: one honest line is enough, such as "2021-22: prepared for engineering entrance exams".
Backlogs: they don't go on the resume, but answer truthfully when an application form asks.
For jobs abroad, school marks are usually left off once you have a degree.
Projects and internships: what you built and what happened
For each project or internship, write a title line — name, organisation or tools, and dates — then two or three bullets on what you did and the result. Some rewrites:
Project. Weak: "Made an e-commerce website using MERN stack." Stronger: "Built an inventory and order-tracking web app (React, Node.js, MongoDB) for a local bookshop, replacing its paper register for 1,200 titles; wrote the search and reporting modules."
Internship. Weak: "Did internship at XYZ Pvt Ltd." Stronger: "Marketing Intern, XYZ Foods, May-July 2025: ran a WhatsApp outreach campaign to 400 retailers in Pune, 38 of whom placed a trial order."
Industrial training. Weak: "Six weeks training at a manufacturing plant." Stronger: "Six-week industrial training on a CNC machining line: timed tool changes across three shifts and proposed a fixture layout the supervisor trialled."
Put a GitHub or live link next to software projects. Course-style "summer training", where you attended classes rather than worked on a real problem, belongs under certifications or training, not internships. Virtual internships and job simulations are fine to list if you name them as such. The internship resume template shows how to give internships room on one page, and role pages such as the software engineer resume template show how projects are laid out for tech roles.
Certifications: NPTEL, Coursera and what counts
Certificates help when they relate to the job and show real effort. List three to five, newest first, as "Course — issuer or platform, month and year, score if any".
NPTEL: courses mostly from the IITs and IISc, with a certificate after a proctored exam. Give the course name, the institute that offered it, and your score or any label printed on the certificate. Example: "Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms Using Python — NPTEL (IIT Madras), 2025".
Coursera: name the course and the university or company behind it, for example "Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate — Coursera, 2025".
Tech roles: vendor certifications such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals.
Commerce and finance: a TallyPrime course, NISM certifications for mutual fund or securities roles, or the CA, CMA or CS levels you have cleared.
Marketing: Google Analytics or Google Ads certifications.
Leave out anything that doesn't support the role: basic MS Office on a developer resume, a dozen one-hour badges, or workshops where you only attended. A short list of relevant certificates that a recruiter can verify looks more serious than a long one.
Personal details and the declaration: include or leave out?
The traditional Indian resume ends with personal details — date of birth, gender, father's name, marital status, nationality, languages known, permanent address — and a declaration such as "I hereby declare that the information given above is true to the best of my knowledge", with place, date and signature.
Include them when:
Your college placement cell's template has them.
You are applying to a government body, a PSU, or a traditional or smaller firm that expects a biodata-style format (government recruitment usually has its own application form as well).
A recruiter specifically asks for them.
Leave them out when:
You are applying off-campus to MNCs, startups and most private companies. They need your contact details and city; the rest only uses space.
You are applying abroad. In the US, UK, Canada and Australia, age, marital status and a photo are usually left off.
Never include Aadhaar, PAN or passport numbers, bank details, or height and weight unless the job genuinely requires them. "Languages known" is worth keeping for client-facing roles. A photo is optional in India; leave it off for MNC and overseas applications unless asked. On a one-page resume, the declaration is usually the first thing to cut.
Keep it to one page, and name the PDF properly
For freshers, one page is the norm. Our one-page vs two-page resume guide explains why; here is how to fit everything:
Give each education entry a single line.
Keep two or three bullets per project or internship, and your best three projects at most.
Cut hobbies, or keep one line if they are specific ("district-level chess player", not "reading, music").
Drop personal details and the declaration unless they are expected.
File type and name. Send a PDF unless the portal asks for Word. Name it so a recruiter can find it again: "Priya-Sharma-Resume.pdf" or "Priya-Sharma-Data-Analyst-Resume.pdf", never "resume final (2).pdf". Open the PDF and try selecting a line of text; if you can't, hiring software may not be able to read it either. Check the portal's file-size limit before uploading.

Keep a Personal Details section for placement cell or government formats, and hide it for MNC and overseas applications without deleting anything.
Choose the Academic layout to lead with education, or Compact header to fit everything on one page. For a plain, conventional look, see the simple resume template. You can switch between all 260 designs in one tap.
Use the optional AI help to tighten bullets or tailor the objective to a job description, and check the ATS score before you upload.
What is the best resume format for freshers in India?
A one-page, reverse-chronological format: header, a short objective or summary, education with CGPA and Class 10 and 12 marks, skills, internships, projects, certifications and achievements. If your placement cell gives a template, follow it.
Should a fresher resume have a career objective?
A short one helps if it is specific: your degree, your strongest proof and the role you want, in two or three lines. Skip generic lines about working in a reputed organisation.
Should I include personal details and a declaration on my resume?
Only when your placement cell, a government body or a traditional employer expects them, or a recruiter asks. Leave them out for MNCs, startups and jobs abroad, and never include Aadhaar, PAN or bank details.
Should I write my CGPA or a percentage?
Write whatever your university awards, with the scale, such as 8.1/10 CGPA. Convert to a percentage only when an application asks, using your university's official formula.
How should I name my resume file?
Use your name and, if you like, the role, such as Priya-Sharma-Data-Analyst-Resume.pdf. Send it as a PDF unless the portal asks for a Word file.
