Testers are hired for judgement as much as tools: knowing what to test, finding the defects that matter and making releases safer. A strong QA engineer resume shows both sides of the job, manual and exploratory testing alongside automation frameworks, with numbers for coverage, defects caught and time saved. This guide covers format, ISTQB and other credentials by country, summaries and bullets for manual testers and automation engineers, and testing keywords. Upload your resume as a PDF, Word file or photo, or start from the example below, and edit it in an ATS-readable design.
Use reverse-chronological order on one page for up to about six years in testing. Two pages suit test leads and QA managers with strategy, team and tooling work to show. In India and the UK many testers call it a CV; the content is the same.
Section order: summary, skills split into testing types and tools, certifications, experience, education. Place ISTQB higher than you would place a certificate on most tech resumes, because testing ads often name it. If you are moving from manual testing to automation, put your automation work straight after the summary, with a GitHub link to a framework you built. Keep each role to three or four bullets, split between manual and automation if you do both.
For layout, ResumeInk's Skills-first layout places a shaded block of grouped skills before experience, which suits testers with a long tool list, while Classic keeps things conventional. The skills-based resume template page shows how a skills-led page reads.
What to include in a QA engineer resume
Summary: manual, automation or both; your main framework and language; the product or domain; one result.
Testing skills: test design techniques, functional, regression, exploratory, API, performance, mobile and accessibility testing, UAT support.
Tools: automation framework, test management, defect tracking, CI and device clouds, each named exactly.
Experience: what you tested, the release cadence, test cases written or automated, defects found before release, escaped defects, regression time saved.
Domain knowledge: banking, insurance, healthcare, telecom or e-commerce. Regulated domains value testers who already know the rules.
Environments: the browsers, devices, operating systems and test data you set up and manage.
Scale: users, transactions or releases a year for each product you tested, so the reader can judge the risk you covered.
Certifications and education: ISTQB level and year, plus your degree.
If you built a framework from scratch, give it a custom section such as Automation frameworks in the ResumeInk editor, with a line on its design and a link.
QA Engineer certifications and credentials by country
No country requires a licence to work in software testing. The most widely recognised credential is the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL), now at version 4.0, followed by advanced and specialist modules in test analysis, test management and test automation. An ISTQB certificate is valid internationally; national member boards run it:
India: the Indian Testing Board (ITB). CTFL often appears as preferred in services and banking-project ads, and helps freshers moving into testing.
US: the ASTQB. Some employers also know ASQ's Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE) or QAI's CSTE.
UK: ISTQB is widely recognised; experienced testers may hold the older ISEB Foundation from BCS, which is still worth listing.
Australia: the ANZTB. Government and banking projects may add a police check or security clearance.
If you are partway through an advanced module, write "in progress" with the expected date. Tool certificates for Selenium or Playwright carry less weight than a framework you can show on GitHub.
QA Engineer resume summary examples
Manual testers lead with domain and test design; automation engineers lead with the framework and the time it saves. Freshers can begin in the resume builder for freshers.
Entry level: ISTQB CTFL-certified tester with a B.Sc. in IT and a six-month internship testing a retail web app. Wrote 300+ test cases, logged 120 defects in Jira with clear steps to reproduce, and built a small Selenium and Java suite for the login and cart flows.
Mid level: QA engineer with five years on banking apps, covering manual, API and UI automation. Built a Playwright and TypeScript framework that runs 900 regression tests on every pull request, cutting the regression cycle from four days to five hours.
Senior: QA lead with 11 years in insurance and healthcare software, managing eight manual and automation testers. Set the test strategy for a core platform rewrite, brought escaped defects down by 60% over two years and made risk-based testing part of release planning.
QA Engineer resume bullet point examples
Built a Playwright and TypeScript framework with page objects and API fixtures; 900 regression tests now run on every pull request in GitHub Actions.
Cut the regression cycle from 4 days to 5 hours by automating 70% of the manual suite and running it in parallel on BrowserStack.
Designed 450 test cases for a loan origination system using boundary value analysis and equivalence partitioning, catching 38 defects in system testing.
Ran exploratory sessions before each release that found 12 high-severity issues scripted tests had missed over two quarters.
Automated 220 REST API checks with REST Assured, cutting API defects found in UAT by 45%.
Load-tested checkout with JMeter at 5,000 concurrent users and found a connection-pool limit before the year's biggest sale.
Coordinated UAT with 25 business users across three branches, triaging 180 issues and reaching sign-off two weeks early.
Cut flaky test failures from 11% to under 2% by replacing fixed waits with explicit waits and isolating test data.
Context turns a count into evidence: say how severe the defects were and when they were caught, whether in system testing, UAT or production.
Skills & ATS keywords for QA engineer resumes
Testing ads mix methods and tools, and automation-heavy roles may be titled SDET or test automation engineer. Cover both sides in the ad's own words:
Manual testing: test plans, test cases, test design techniques, functional, regression, smoke and sanity, exploratory, UAT, cross-browser and mobile testing, defect life cycle
Automation: Selenium WebDriver, Playwright, Cypress, Appium, TestNG, JUnit, pytest, Cucumber and BDD with Gherkin, page object model
API and performance: Postman, REST Assured, SoapUI, JMeter, k6, Gatling
Languages and data: Java, Python, JavaScript or TypeScript, SQL
Calling everything "testing". Name the kind: functional, regression, API, performance, exploratory. Ads and recruiter searches use those words.
Counting test cases with no outcome. "Executed 2,000 test cases" shows effort, not value. Add defects found, escaped defects or time saved.
Overstating automation. If you only ran scripts someone else wrote, say so, or build a small framework of your own and link it.
Typos. A tester's resume is read for attention to detail. Check spelling, dates and tool names such as JMeter and TestNG twice, then read it aloud once.
Hiding the domain. Banking, insurance, health and telecom knowledge is a real advantage, so put it in your summary.
Leaving out how you work with developers. Testers who join sprint planning, review acceptance criteria and pair on fixes catch issues earlier. If you do, say so.
How do I write a QA tester resume with no experience?
Lead with any testing you have done, such as internships, college projects, crowdtesting or bug bounties, plus a small automation project on GitHub. Add the ISTQB Foundation certificate if you have it, and keep the resume to one page.
Is ISTQB worth putting on a resume?
Yes. It is the most widely recognised testing certificate, and some ads, especially in India and on banking projects, list it as preferred. Write the full name and level, such as ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL), with the year.
How do I move from manual testing to automation on my resume?
Show the automation you have already done, even if small: scripts you wrote, a framework you built in your own time, API tests in Postman. Put it near the top, name the language, and keep your manual testing strengths in the summary.
What is the difference between a QA engineer and an SDET resume?
An SDET resume reads more like a developer's, with programming language, framework design, CI pipelines and code reviews. A QA engineer resume can balance manual testing, test strategy and automation, so match the emphasis to the ad.
Should a QA resume say how many bugs I found?
Yes, with context such as severity and whether they were caught before release. A few critical defects caught early say more than a large total.
